The first stop for all new soap recipes is my shower. Sometimes I use a couple of bars of a new recipe before I wrap it, name it and introduce it to the public. This bar was creatively named "CASTILE BAR", and out to meet the public it went, with a "limited edition" sign.
When customers pick up a bar of my castile soap, I ask them if they have ever used REAL castile soap. Most people have used castile liquid soap-not the same thing. A friend's husband has used, ONLY, castile soap for the last 5 years and he loves it! He graciously brought me a wrapped bar of his, so that I could read the label. The ingredient list had no olive oil in it. It listed vegetable oil and coconut oil...anything with coconut oil is loveable! However, I made the pure version of castile soap that does not have coconut oil in it.
I have 2 grandchildren who go to daycare, and from November 1st till about May 1st they have perpetual snots and boogers pouring out of their noses. Some days it feels like I am the only adult who does not think snots and boogers are an adorable accoutrement to their faces, as I am constantly following them around and ordering them to "blow".
Upper class Romans used castile soap to rid their skin of impurities, to give a youthful appearance, and as a luxury not afforded to the commoners. (This may have contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire!) My castile soap reminds me of my grandchildren's snots and boogers, in that it feels slippery and slimey. When I rubbed it on my skin, it didn't lather, more slime followed. It is indeed gentle. It did indeed get me clean. I can't get by the feel and visual picture of snots and boogers when I'm in the shower.
I have had a number of customers tell me that they love "CASTILE BAR", and I fight the urge to suggest that they "blow". Pure castile soap is not my cup of tea and I am already thinking about how I will modify the recipe. I love the thick, luxurious lather that my other soaps make in the shower. But if there are any surviving, upper class Romans, aging out there, my castile bar is available, for a limited time, for you to revisit and preserve your youthful appearance!
